Salaam Centre Crowned Winner of Best Future Design at British Beacon Mosque Awards 2024

The Salaam Centre, which reimagines traditional Islamic architecture for contemporary Britain, was recognised for its innovative design that creates an inclusive community space whilst honouring Islamic architectural heritage.

The Salaam Centre, a groundbreaking architectural project in Harrow, has been awarded the prestigious Best Future Design recognition at the 2024 British Beacon Mosque Awards. This accolade celebrates the Centre's innovative approach to creating a multi-faith community space that harmoniously blends Islamic architectural heritage with contemporary British design.

The award recognises the Centre's pioneering vision of what a modern Muslim community space can be – a cultural embassy that welcomes people of all faiths while making a bold architectural statement. Centre is committed to architectural excellence and community integration.

Speaking to the New Statesman in 2018, Ali Mangera of Mangera Yvars Architects, explained the philosophy behind the project: "In the UK, mosques should be seen as embassies to a faith, and as such they need to provide 'architectural outreach' and to create buildings that inspire and contribute to the cityscape while providing an inviting spiritual home open to all, regardless of faith."

Cultural Heritage Meets Contemporary Design

The winning design features a striking filigree-clad façade that draws inspiration from multiple cultural traditions, from Delhi's Red Fort to William Morris's Arts and Crafts patterns. This eclectic approach reflects the journey of its community members, who trace their heritage through Persia, India, and East Africa to Britain, creating a uniquely British multicultural architectural language.

Among the Centre's most distinctive features is its transparent prayer hall, visible from the outside – a departure from traditional mosque design that emphasises the project's commitment to openness and community engagement. The design incorporates a central piazza inspired by traditional Islamic courtyards, creating a vibrant connection between the Centre's contemplative interior spaces and the surrounding neighbourhood.

Sustainable Design for Future Generations

Sustainability and functionality are seamlessly integrated into the award-winning design. The Centre employs ground source heat pumps and an advanced Building Management System, demonstrating its commitment to environmental stewardship. The facility includes a 250-capacity prayer hall, state-of-the-art sports facilities, educational spaces, and community areas, all designed to serve the diverse needs of the local population.

Setting New Standards

The Beacon Mosque Awards, which recognise outstanding contributions of Islamic centres to Britain's social and cultural fabric, highlighted the Salaam Centre's potential to transform community relations and set new standards for religious architecture in the UK. This recognition validates the Centre's vision of creating a space that transcends traditional boundaries and serves as a model for future religious and community buildings.

When completed, the Salaam Centre will stand as a testament to how thoughtful architectural design can bridge cultural divides and create spaces that enrich the whole community. This prestigious award confirms its position at the forefront of British Islamic architecture and community-centred design.
